The book won a John Newbery Award in 1951. She earned great acclaim in 1950 with her children’s book Amos Fortune, Free Man, based on the true story of an African prince who becomes a slave in America and later gains his freedom. Her most recent book, Open the Door (1999), includes prose and poetry selections.Įlizabeth Yates is best remembered as an author of children’s books. Yates wrote more than twenty-one books for adults and children, including Mountain Born (1943), Patterns on the Wall (1943), A Place for Peter (1953), Prudence Crandall, Woman of Courage (1955), and Carolina's Courage (1964), as well as an autobiographical trilogy. Collins brings up questions of love, identity, and sacrifice that last beyond the momentary thrills of the page. I’m not sure what Eliot would name as the merits of melodrama, but if he means that it’s only an exciting story without much depth or substance, I’d say there’s more to Armadale than that. There’s not much to delight a logical mind, but many memorably-drawn characters, moments of humor and satire, and some penetrating psychological insights. The extremely convoluted plot involves concealed identities, stolen inheritances, murder, suicide, violent love, strange coincidences, and ingenious scams. Melodrama it certainly does have, in abundance. Recommendations from several quarters led me to Armadale, his longest book and the one of which TS Eliot said “It has no merit beyond melodrama, and it has every merit that melodrama can have.” Having enjoyed Wilkie Collins’s two most famous novels, The Woman in White and The Moonstone, I wanted to read more of this Victorian author’s wildly popular sensation fiction. 6/25/2023 0 Comments Bully penelope douglas summaryIt was quite “steamy” (that will be funnier after you read) and the romance and sex are on the darker side which I really enjoyed.I had to know what happened next but didn’t want it to end It is dark and twisty and you really have no idea if the story is going end on a high note or crash and burn. This is marketed as romantic suspense or dark romance and my goodness I was on the edge of my seat for the entire book. But things are different now because Michael and his friends are out for revenge and Erika is enemy #1. This book follows the stories of Michael and Erika as their worlds collide again after a fateful night in High School. *Multiple potential triggers are present in this bookĪfter I finished reading the first book in Douglas’ Bully series I was looking for something a little more adult so was recommended trying out her Devils Night Series…. Recommend if you liked: Den of Vipers, Unsainted other Penelope Douglas works.Corrupt (Devil’s Night #1) by Penelope Douglas Her son Edmund is married to Virginia, who is rather younger than he is, and it’s his second marriage. Violet Aird is easy she’s in her late seventies, a large and comfortable woman who lives on her own. I remember, when I read it before, that I found it a bit hard, sometimes, to remember exactly who was whom, so I made more of an effort with the names this time. Instead, the various storylines revolve around two families who live in the Scottish village nearby: the Airds and the Balmerinos. However she doesn’t feature much in the book at all, and neither does her mother, who comes up with the idea several months before the event. The main story of ‘September’ is the planning and build-up to a dance, given for a young woman called Katy who is approaching twenty-one. I was long overdue re-reading this book, a saga style novel of over 600 pages, but finally picked it from my shelves a week ago, and have just completed it. I think I’ve read them all at least twice, but like to re-read every nine or ten years. I love Rosamunde Pilcher’s writing, and have collected all her books over the years. 6/25/2023 0 Comments The warehouse hartHe received honorable mention in Best American Mystery Stories 2015, 2017, and 2022.
